Highmark Inc. has made a $100 million contribution to the Highmark Foundation to fund Highmark Healthy High 5 for the next five years.

Highmark Healthy High 5 aims to promote lifelong healthy habits in children ages 6-18 by addressing five critical children's health issues: nutrition, physical activity, grieving, self-esteem and bullying. KidShape® is part of the Highmark Healthy High 5 initiative. It is a family-based weight-management program for overweight children, 6-14 years of age. The program is funded by Highmark Inc and offered by Windber Research Institute.
KidShape® teaches participants how to increase their daily physical activity levels, improve their eating habits, decrease sedentary behaviors (such as television viewing), and enhance their self-esteem. The program is lead by a site coordinator, a registered dietician, a mental health professional and a certified exercise instructor. Children must attend the weekly 2 hour classes with a parent or caregiver.
Since fall 2004, KidShape® has been offered 14 times in rotating locations throughout Cambria and Somerset counties. Cohorts typically begin in January, March and September and class size is limited to 20 students. Children between the ages of 6-14 who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than the 85th percentile can be referred by their family doctor or school nurse.

The TeenShape® program has three major components: nutrition, mental health discussion groups and on-site physical activity. TeenShape® participants and families benefit from the following:
- Learning a variety of skills to support long-term healthy lifestyles
- Gaining self-efficacy through participation in class activities
- Establishing and tracking weekly goals
- Engaging in self-monitoring activities
- Learning the importance of positive role modeling and positive reinforcing
TeenShape® provides teens and their families effective tools to improve their eating and physical activity habits. The program also helps teens and their families turn knowledge and skills into lifelong habits. A team of health experts consisting of a Registered Dietitian, a mental health professional, a physical activity expert and a health educator administers the program for teens ages 13-17, who are overweight and their families.
TeenShape® classes are set to kickoff at Westmont Hilltop High School beginning the week of January 11th, 2010 and will serve the female student population ages 13-17 that have a BMI (body max index) of 85% or higher.
